The Area
O Ddrws I Ddrws serves residents south and west of an imaginary line between the village of Trefor on the north coast and Cricieth on the south coast of the Llŷn peninsula.
The Llŷn peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a stronghold of the Welsh language and a very popular visitor destination. There are a number of designated, environmentally important sites within the area and the population is small and scattered.
The economy is seasonal, low paid, uncertain and there is an over-reliance on public sector employment. The economic wealth of the area is concentrated in specific locations therefore distorting the area’s poverty statistics.
Llŷn is a very rural area with many of the associated issues – mobility in particular. Of all the economic areas in Wales (1,906 of them) Llŷn is in the worst 10% in terms of access to services.
The price of fuel is higher than average in Llŷn, we use more than average due to travel distances, and salaries are much lower than average. Despite the cost, the ability to get to work, shop, surgery etc. is essential and so owning a vehicle is a necessity.
